The “principle of limiting nutrients”
Pasture availability and quality determine the live-weight gains and productivity of grazing stock.
Pasture availability is determined primarily by water availability and how intensely the pasture is grazed.
Pasture quality is a function of the digestibility and protein levels of the pasture. The higher the digestibility, the faster the feed passes through the animal, the more pasture the animal can eat, and the greater weight gains achieved.
The Northern Beef Industry utilises a tropical and subtropical forage base. These pastures have characteristics that create limitations for optimal beef cattle production, including:
- Low digestibility
- High fibre content
In addition, there are seasonal changes to the quality of these pastures which if unaddressed can lead to reduced animal health and productivity.
